Chapter Fifteen

Her cheek rests on my bare shoulder as we’re lying in the hotel room bed, covers pulled up for the first time since she’s been over. It’s warm and faintly sticky, like my own skin. I place my hand on her head, play with a few of her curls while I allow my breathing to slow. Hers already has, and her eyelids flutter closed. Time to rest now.

That spa-like tub I thought would get no use on this trip? Oh, it got plenty. The desk where my laptop sits, overlooking the Chicago skyline? That got a very NSFW use as well.

Vanya is something else. Like an ocelot that might seem unassuming from its cute appearance but is ready to unleash in times of need. And she needed.

I must have dozed off, somewhere deep, because I wake to her running a finger down the center of my chest, and it feels like hours have passed, but it could also have been minutes.

“Should we…keep this from our parents for now?” she asks.

Her voice is less confident than normal; she doesn’t want to ask this. But the truth is I was wondering the same, how we would handle it.

“For sure,” I agree. “During the competition? It’ll be too much for them, too distracting. And for us, too. Let’s not involve them until we have to.”

A hint about the future, our future.

“I mean, when we get back home, we’re only an hour apart. That’s really doable. I’ve been wanting to move out on my own at some point anyway. Dreaming now, but—I’ve always liked downtown San Mateo.”

I didn’t think I could flush any further, but I do; there is still fire within me. Once again we’re thinking on similar tracks, and she’s not afraid to say it. God, I feel myself falling for her so hard. She’s so open, so unlike the repressed assholes of my dating past, who could barely tell me they liked me. Her words don’t feel like just talk, either; her voice is ringing so genuine and hopeful that we could make this work.

“Only twenty minutes away from my place. Even better.”

She climbs on top of me and kisses me, then glances at the nightstand clock, a red glow I’ve refused to give my attention. I don’t want to know.

She sighs. “I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I should get back. My mom’s an early riser, and we have some Mediterranean diet lecture tomorrow morning that we supposedly can’t miss. She’ll be knocking on my door, and if we want to keep this between us for now—”

I nod, sad to see her go but fully understanding. “You’ve got to head back. Of course. Want me to ride there with you?”

“All the way down and then come back up? My white knight, I’d never ask that of thee.”

“Seriously, it’s fine,” I say, both wanting to spend time with her and wondering how I’d ever get out of this bed. I seem to have become fused with it. The exhaustion from several nights of zero-to-poor sleep is catching up with me.
